Dear 4th Grade Parents:
Now that the school year is underway, I wanted to explain some of the weekly class activities that we will have each week in Language Arts Class. With the implementation of the new Common Core Standards, the curriculum is much more rigorous and challenging. The students are working very hard in class. To help them continue to do their best it is important that they are completing the following assignments and studying at home each week.
Reading Logs
Reading logs are a weekly assignment. The students are to read for at least 20 minutes four times a week. After reading they are to complete a reading log entry. Each week we are adding new “brain camp” skills that the students can use on their reading responses. They also are supposed to find two words in their reading that stood out to them. They are to complete the Word Detectives page. The entire packet will be collected on Fridays during our Brain Camp activities.
Spelling Tests
Spelling tests are given each Friday. The students will take their tests on spellingcity.com. This website is available for the students to study all week long. There are games and other activities to practice their words. I also have on our springmyer4thgrade.weebly.com website many other spelling practice activities. Each week, we glue in our new spelling word list in student assignment notebooks. We practice our words in class, but the majority of studying will be completed at home.
Academic Vocabulary and Root Word Study
Each week, the students will receive vocabulary page in their vocabulary section of their notebooks. This word list will be completed in class. We are adding to these words all week long. This will be assessed on Fridays.
