This year is full of exciting changes for us in Language Arts. We will be working towards our "I can" statements each week that focus on the Common Core Standards. We will be reading fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and much more!
We will have weekly spelling tests. Each list has 20 words. The students will be tested on Fridays. We will take our tests using spellingcity.com. The students can practice their words on this website and take practice spelling tests too.
Each week, we will have a reading log to complete. The students will need to read 4 times each week for at least 20 minutes. After reading, they will write a one- sentence reflection statement. We will practice writing strong and thoughtful reflections in class. Also, as part of our reading log practice, we are working on being "word detectives". The students will pick out two words from their reading each week and fill in a chart for each word. The reading logs are a very important part of our growth as readers. We are working to become metacognitive while we read. Metacognition is thinking about our thinking. This will be a part of our "Brain Camp" on Fridays! We want to help our brains grow strong!
Another goal this year will be to read a LOT! Students will get to experience new genres in the books they are reading as they complete their Reading Passports. After a student finishes a book, they can complete a passport page in their notebook. Books can take us places and we are going to be in for a great journey!
To practice our public speaking skills (which are a huge part of the Common Core Standards), we will have Poet's Corner Fridays. Starting in October, students will be assigned Fridays in which they will be selecting a poem of their choice that they really enjoy! I have plenty of resources for the students to look through to select their poems. They will read their poem to the class and briefly state in under a minute why they picked their poem. Each poem selected and their selection statement will be put inside a class poetry book.
We will also have writing workshop! It is very important that the students express themselves through writing and try new types of writing. The workshop time is when students will write in their notebooks and work towards producing at least ONE final published piece each quarter. Finished pieces will go in our writing portfolios. One piece will be submitted to our class book at the end of the school year!
This is going to be a fun and exciting year!
