It was so wonderful to see so many of you during our conferences the past two weeks! Please remember that if you have any concerns or questions to feel free to contact us! Grandparent’s night is Tuesday November 10th from 6-8 PM. As a reminder, we do not have school on Wednesday November 11th in honor of Veteran’s Day. Book fair is going on in the library. We will be visiting it on Monday during our Library time. Students will be able to purchase books at that time. In language arts, the students are continuing the argument unit. We have practiced finding and making claims, supporting them with evidence and giving our warrants for the reasons. They have been researching the question “Should the United States keep the penny?” We have researched using all sorts of media- interviews, infographics, political cartoons, and videos. The students will be researching next week various questions and picking sides for those questions. We will be studying how to craft those arguments into publications next week! All the materials we looked at today are on Schoology. Next week is a vocabulary week! We will have a test on Friday, packets are due Thursday. They also were all assigned a “Which Side Are You On?” article to respond to that is due on Tuesday. They will be picking a side for the argument regarding school uniforms- one that they were excited to learn more about and had very vocal opinions about it in class! In Social Studies, the students are focusing on three branches of government and the idea of checks and balances. Their test will be on Friday. Study guides will go home on Monday. In math, we just completed chapter 5- factors, multiples and patterns. Corrected study guides are coming home today. The test is on Monday November 16th. Please continue to study. The blank study guide will be linked in a remind.com message. We will be starting division soon with 1-digit divisors, chapter 4. Continue to study facts everyday! Have a great week! Dear 4th Graders and Parents: The 2nd Quarter is off to a great yet busy start. We are still collecting pumpkins for the St. Joseph Orphanage if you would like to donate to help make the Halloween season special for those children. We also have conferences right around the corner. There are still a few spots available with each teacher if you wish to sign up still. One thing that we want to make sure that the students really understand is that there will not be as many “redo” opportunities given for 2nd quarter on assignments. Now that students know our routines and expectations, we want to help them realize that they need to try their best the first time they complete a task. They need to make sure they slow down, follow directions, and complete all of what they are required to do. We are helping them to become independent and self reflective learners because of this. Next week we will begin our study of Government! We will be learning so many things over the next 3 weeks. The students will be learning about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, especially the First Amendment. We will be learning about the three branches of government at a State and National level, and how our system of Checks and Balances works. We will be learning all about our rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United States of America. In language arts, we will continue our work with text structure. We are looking at “blueprints” for paragraphs and deciding what text structure they are following. Next week, we will be doing menu work to help us practice this difficult skill more. We have a reading log due on Friday. We will be practicing synthesis statements (I used to think…. but now I think.. because) to help raise our thinking levels. This week is a vocabulary week with Unit 5 Flocabulary. There will be a vocabulary test on Friday October 30th. In math, the fourth graders completed and checked their math study guides for Chapter 3. The study guides went home on Weds. Oct. 21st. Your child will have a math test over Chapter 3 on Weds. Oct. 28th. Please review with your child a little bit each night before the test. If you need a blank study guide to use at home, you can print one here have your child see me for a copy. We will be starting our unit on factors, multiples, and patterns. It is important for your child to have the multiplication facts memorized. Our timed test for 2nd quarter will be over 50 multiplication problems in five minutes. Please continue to review multiplication facts with your child. Thanks and have a great week! The 4th Grade Teachers Dear 4th Grade Students and Parents:
It is hard to believe that 1st quarter has come to an end! Time has just flown by! We look forward to meeting with you at conferences in a few weeks to discuss progress your child has made so far this year. Conferences are October 27th and 29th from 4:40-8:00 PM and November 4th from 4:40-7:00PM. Please sign up with your child's homeroom teacher. The homeroom teacher will discuss your child's progress in all subjects! Click here to schedule a conference. Walk-A-Thon is this Friday! Please be sure to dress appropriately, wear sunscreen, and wear your walking shoes! Each child may and is encouraged to bring a bottle of water with their name clearly labeled on it. We will start our walking at 1:15 until the celebration assembly at 2:00. Here is a look at what is coming up in your child's classes this week: This week we will be moving back to Social Studies. We are going to be learning about the Historic Indians from Ohio. These include the tribes known as Ottawa, Shawnee, Seneca, Delaware, Miami, and Wyandot. We will be making comparisons between these and our prehistoric indians. The students will be researching and making powerpoint presentations about one of these tribes. In math students will continue working on two-digit x two digit multiplication. They will be learning several methods of solving the equations. Some of the methods include partial products, distributive property, regrouping, and lattice. We will continue working on multi-step word problems. Please continue to review multiplication facts each day with your child. In Language Arts, we will continue our work with nonfiction text features and main idea. This is a particularly challenging skill for many 4th graders! There are many review games online that students can play to keep practicing! We will take our end of the quarter nonfiction assessment on Thursday and Friday. This week is a spelling week. Be sure to practice on Spelling City. Book tweets are due today! Many students did a great job of pacing themselves and making sure to keep on them all quarter. To keep on pace, a students should be completing a book in their reading level every 2 weeks. For 2nd quarter, due to the holidays, the students will be required to complete only 4 book tweets. They will be due on December 14th! Have a great week- Mrs. Criswell Mrs. Dooley Mrs. Townsley Tomorrow we will be taking a little quiz covering information from our Weathering and Erosion unit. While the students are testing they will be allowed to have a "weathering snack." We have learned this week that weathering is when rocks and mineral are broken apart. As long as their snack can be something that is "broken" into pieces they are welcome to snack away during the test. Some examples of acceptable "weathering snacks" would be
pop tarts cookies crackers muffin doughnut chips, pretzels candy bar granola bar string cheese brownie Have a great weekend!!! |
