Dear Parents and 4th Graders:
We made it through week 1! It was a hot week upstairs, but we all survived and worked really hard in class too!
This week, reading logs will start. They were sent home in homework folders. They are due on Friday September 5th. The students are to read for at least 20 minutes, four times a week. After they read, they are to write a few sentences about what they read and what they were thinking while they were reading. We practiced this today with the book "Ish". We made "Real Reading Cereal" to show how important it is to be thinking and interacting with the text and not just to read the words off the page.
We also have our first spelling and vocabulary list for Unit 1. Our first spelling test is on Friday September 5th. We will be studying the meanings of these words and using them in our writings for the next two weeks. We will end Unit 1 with a vocabulary test over those words on Friday September 12th.
The students need to be working on their reading logs and to start studying their spelling words. They can study their spelling words on Spelling City. www.spellingcity.com/OHLSDGrade4 .
The students did great this week working on nonfiction summaries in our writing notebooks, exploring character traits and how to prove them with evidence from the text, and doing the "sentence test" to determine what makes a complete sentence. It was a great first week! I can't wait for next week to start!
Enjoy the three day weekend!
