Unit 1 on Reading Street is called "Turning Points". All of the stories investigate the BIG question "What can we learn from exploring new places and things?".
The first story is an excerpt from the chapter book Because of Winn-Dixie. This is a realistic fiction story about a young girl and her adventures in a new town making new friends with the help of her new dog, Winn-Dixie, named after the store she found him in. We will be studying the parts of a story and "story roller coasters".
The second story is called "Lewis and Clark and Me". This historical fantasy has bits of facts inserted into it. It is the story of Lewis and Clark's expedition through the eyes of their dog. During this story, we will be writing the first of our two publications for the quarter for writing. We will be writing an expository composition (research report) about how Lewis and Clark worked as a team to achieve a goal. We will be reading several mini books about Lewis and Clark, looking for challenges that they faced on their journey and how they overcame these challenges.
The third story is called "The Horned Toad Prince". This is a trickster tale is a funny story about a horned toad who can talk people into doing anything that he wants and about a young cowgirl who doesn't keep her promise. During this story, we will be talking about the Southwest region of the United States.
The final story for Unit 1 is a nonfiction story called "Letter's Home From Yosemite". This story is filled with facts and photographs about Yosemite National Park written in letter format. We will study other national parks this week as well.
And that's all for Unit 1!
