4th Grade Language Arts
Mrs. Dooley Room 206
Welcome to 4th Grade Language Arts! This year the students will be coming to room 206 for their reading and writing instruction. We will be covering many topics throughout the year based on the Language Arts Standards for Ohio.
This year, we will be continuing to implement a program called “Reading Street”. Each week, we will be reading a new story from our reading books and working on a vocabulary skill, a comprehension skill, reading strategy investigation, and a review comprehension skill. There will be spelling lists and grammar skills practiced each week as well which all relate to the story we are reading in our reading books.
We will also be keeping a writing journal and trying new types of writing genres. The first quarter will focus mainly on memoir style writing and as the year progressing we will start to explore the genres of poetry, expository text, mysteries, fables, and narratives. We will have designated writing times throughout the week during class, but the students may work on writings in their journals at home if they wish.
The students will be keeping a reading log each week. They will be required to read at least 4 out of the 5 days a week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are grouped together as a weekend) for a 20 minute session. During this session they are to write a few sentences on their reading journals about what they have read. As the year progresses, we will be switching over to reading journals in which the students will write a one page response using the list of journal prompts (more than one may be used in one week assignment). The reading logs and journals will be due each THURSDAY. We will share these in reading response groups.
Through all of these activities the students will have experience strengthening and building 21st century learning skills that they will need for the rest of their lives. Access to our reading materials will be available online for all students using the Reading Street Online link in the menu to the left.
Through the year the students will be participating in "Brain Camp". We will be studying reading strategies such as metacognition, drawing conclusions, synthesizing, connections, and many more. We also will be studying levels of thinking using Blooms Taxonomy. By becoming aware of our thinking while reading, we will become stronger readers and writers for ALL subjects!
In the spring, we will have a review of all the topics we have learned as we prepare for the Ohio 4th Grade Reading Achievement Test. This year our goal will be to help develop and strengthen skills to become strong independent readers and writers.
I look forward to a great year!
